Women who have had abortions suffer an increased risk of anxiety, depression, and suicide. A study published in a recent edition of the Journal of Anxiety Disorder found that women who aborted their unintended pregnancies were 30% more likely to subsequently report all the symptoms of generalized anxiety disorder than those women who had carries their unintended pregnancies to term.
A study of a state-funded medical insurance program in California published in the American Journal of Orthopsychiatry in 2002 showed that the rate of mental health claims for women who aborted was 17% higher than those who had carried their children to term. And, according to a 1996 article in the British Medical Journal, and a 2002 article in the Southern Medical Journal the risk from suicide is two to six times higher for women who have has abortions when compared, again, with women who have given birth.

January 14, 2007

Dear Friends:

In two weeks, we will observe Catholic Schools Week in our parish. This is the time each year that we honor our school’s excellence and highlight its mission and traditions. It’s the time that we reflect on the high-quality, faith-focused, values-added education that we offer and remind our entire community of the vital contribution we make to education and the quality of life.
Most of all, it’s a time to celebrate!

This year’s Catholic Schools Week theme is “Catholic Schools: The Good News in Education.” The logo, which you will be seeing around the parish on banners and posters, features an open book, symbolizing both the Bible and knowledge. The theme is a particularly fitting message for our times, underscoring the Christ-centered foundation and academic excellence of Catholic schools.

Many of you, like me, see the wonderful reality of Catholic education every day at our school. It’s in the dedication and integrity of our principal, Janet Brogan, teachers, staff, administrators, board members and everyone else involved in running St. Paul’s School. It’s in the hard work and accomplishments of our students who, day by day, are learning and growing in the Lord and gaining a values-filled education. It is in the commitment of our parents, guardians and volunteers who give selflessly of their time and talents to help make our school excellent.

Please join in our Catholic Schools Week celebration. Participate in the activities and, if you can, volunteer your time. Visit the classrooms during our Open House, meet with the teachers and students, and congratulate them on their accomplishments. Encourage friends and neighbors who may be considering Catholic education for their children to visit the school. Not only is this a time to celebrate, it’s also a time to spread the word about the “good news” in education!

Yours in Christ,
Msgr. Joe

Respect Life

From stem cell research to assisted suicide, bioethics was a hot topic of debate in 2006. In California, pro-life advocates teamed with disability rights activists, advocates for the poor, and others to defeat a measure that would have legalized assisted suicide in California. Meanwhile, much scientific progress occurred in adult stem cell research, the ethical alternative to anti-life embryonic stem cell research. For example, there’s evidence that a patient’s own olfactory stem cells can restore feeling in people who have been paralyzed.
The Principal Says…

The Faculty, Staff and Students of St. Paul School would like to wish everyone in the parish a very blessed and Happy New Year. Thank you for your support this past year.

Food Certificates will be on sale after the Masses this weekend December 30th & 31st.

We are still collecting Box Tops for Education Labels, Campbell Soup UPC Labels, Redner’s Save-a-tapes, and used inkjet cartridges. They may be left on a table in the vestibule.

All of those inkjet cartridges are paying off. We have received $245 so far this year from Staples. We also get about $30 every two weeks from the cans placed in the huge bin at the end of the parking lot. Our Campbell’s Labels were sent in and they totaled over 14,000. Thank you for helping us with these small but valuable programs.

Any student wishing to attend any of the nine Catholic High Schools may pick up an application for a $1000 scholarship. The scholarship applications are in the rectory and school offices. Scholarships are based on academics, service to the school, parish, and community, extracurricular activities, and Pastor, Principal, and Teacher recommendations. The application must be returned by January 5th to the school or rectory.

Mark Your Calendars

Time is running out to signup for the Men’s Retreat: St. Paul’s 5th Annual Men’s Retreat will be held at the newly refurbished St. Francis Retreat House in Easton on the weekend of January 12-14, 2007. This year’s theme: “New Energy, New Life in the Holy Spirit” will be presented by Fr. Dan Havron, the new retreat master. Let’s welcome Jesus in the New Year and make our paths straight unto the Lord. For information or to make reservations, call Mike Nagle at 610-797-7313.

Respect Life

They are willing to save the whales, but abort the humans. Protecting animals can never be as important a task as protecting young humans from abortion, embryonic stem cell research or other forms of experimentation.” Such a viewpoint, though fundamentally correct, should not be taken to signify that animal abuse in our society is an ethical issue that we can forget about. Rather, concern for exercising proper stewardship over animals ought to be a balanced part of a broader concern to avoid exploiting the vulnerable, wherever they are encountered.

The Catholic Church recognizes how man holds a special place in creation, while remaining an integral part of that creation. Made uniquely in God’s image and likeness, he still belongs to the animal kingdom. Feet on the ground, head looking up to the stars, man exercises a limited dominion over the world and over the remainder of creation, including the animal kingdom. He perennially faces the question of how to properly exercise that dominion, which is not an absolute right of domination over God’s creation. He is called to reasonably use, rather than abuse, the powers he has received.

To be precise, we should not speak of animal rights but of animal welfare. Animals do not have rights in the way that humans do. Animal welfare means that we recognize that animals can be used for reasonable purposes, but should not be abused.

Dear Parishioners,

Last week I happened to drive past Pastor Manny Stivers’ church, Trinity Memorial Lutheran. [I’ve known Manny since my Lehighton days.] His outside billboard had a message that inspired me for this year’s Christmas message. I’ll take a little liberty with his message and craft it a bit more into the Christmas scene.

Christmas is not a season; it is a way of life.

What a great reminder for all! Nowadays, well before Thanksgiving Day, the commercial Christmas Season is underway. And thank God that “that Season” is only around for 6 to 8 weeks. The challenge for the true believer is not to fall prey to “this
Christmas Season” but, to realize what we celebrate, what we remember on December 25th is this blessed event some 2000 years ago should be a life altering event for us today.

The tragic reality is that for the common person, and even for many Christians, this day has been trivialized with the glitter of the “holidays:” decorated trees, wreaths, crèches, lighted homes, candles in the windows, gifts under the trees, cookies and fine
meals. In themselves, none of these are bad but they do have a tendency to nail down the Christmas event to one day out of the year. More times than not, we don’t even extend it to the traditional 12 Days of Christmas … up to the Epiphany.

When we do that, we minimize the true transforming message of the Christ Child. We have heard it time and time again: God so loved the world that he sent his only Son into the world, not to condemn us but to save us. I’m sure all of us hear that quote often … but do we truly listen and take it to heart. Do I truly believe that Jesus came into this world to die for “me” … and that he
did so, even while I was [am] a sinner. That is Good News that should be celebrated not one day a year but all 365 days of the year. It should be a truth that transforms everyday of my life.

What would that transformation look like? Well, if God loved me so much like that … then I should try to return the favor by loving him like that. And he says we can do it by loving one another like he loved us … everyday of our lives. It doesn’t mean that I have to “feel good” about everyone. But it sure means that I don’t actively do anything that will hurt them. Easily said, but not so easily done!

So the value of Christmas Day is that it should remind us of the love of our God who would rather die than be separated from us … and our obligation to try to show that love always.

Christmas is not a season; it is a way of life.

Respect Life

The time has come to give birth to the Christ Child. Mary, like mothers the world over, has endured nine months of worry, difficulty and sacrifice. As she brings forth her newborn Son, the distant words of the angel are embodied: “Blessed are you are among women, blessed is the fruit of your womb Jesus.” likewise blessed is every mother who has nurtured a child to birth, especially through a difficult or unplanned pregnancy.

From the Pastor…

Welcome to Father James Farrel of Liguorian who will give a special presentation at each Mass this weekend.

Dear Parishioners:

A few years ago we modified our Parish Visitation to include two specific groups: families with children who are or should be in PREP or Catholic school; and families with potential candidates for our Journey in Faith Program, which begins in September.

In addition to the above visits we also do a modified version of a full parish visitation. In this bulletin today you will find a Parish Visitation envelope. We ask you to please prayerfully consider donating $50 per working person in the household [if you can].

If you would like a visit from one of our parish staff, please check off the area marked “Yes, I would like a visit.” When we receive your reply, we will schedule a visit with you. If you do not care for a visit, do not check the box, but please do return your Visitation envelope with your donation. Be sure to include your name, address and envelope number on the envelope.

Thank you for your support and prayers for our parish. May God continue to bless your generosity.

Sincerely,

Msgr. Joe
